Fishgirl - Guard by SnakeToast Fishgirl - Guard by SnakeToast
This is an older, more mature Fishgirl, in some distant town where she has found employment as a guard...

This was a deliberate attempt to tackle a lighting/mood/painting style that is unfamailiar to me. I was heavily influenced by Lakehurwitz's Beryl [link]
but I don't think I hit that level of awesome ;) Part of it is that I'm realizing my painting style is very soft, and part is that I could have spent more time designing a character instead of jumping straight into painting... oh well!

Oh cool =0 Maine is beautiful. I love the mooses <3 I've only been there for one summer, unfortunately, and the lobster ice cream was... different. I'd have to try it again to remember what it tastes like since I was much younger when I went.
I've never been more southward than North Carolina, since that's where I moved from Pennsylvania. I like to think I'd enjoy living in "glacial wonderland," but I'm so used to the warm weather xD Where would you move if you could move anywhere in the world?

ewwwwww lobster ice cream :| ?
hmmm. well if I could transplant my current life/house/friends to anywhere in the world. i think I'd love to go somewhere warm and friendly. Australia comes to mind. It still has cities, but a whole lot of wild country too. And the climate can't be beat... of course I think 99% of all local species are poisonous, but I would just wear long pants and good boots...
Otherwise, montreal is pretty great already... it just has that whole 'winter' thing... but I hibernate. It's cool.
you?

Yup. It's too bad I can't remember how it tasted or I would tell you... But I remember my family was pretty disgusted xD
Australia sounds really nice o3o At one point, I wanted to move there myself, lol. Just don't get your boots at Claire's or something, ha ha. That might not end well. If you were to move there, would you get a motorcycle for the open land? :3 That'd be super fun! You could get into hunting, too. Snakes are good eating <3
The only thing about Australia is that you can't play like 90% of the videogames that you can here because they pretty much abolished gore, killing policemen, and stuff like that... I wouldn't be able to get Left 4 Dead 2 there ;[
Hibernation! I remember doing that...

I... don't really know where I would move... I'm sort of politically minded (sort of because I have done my research but am not brave enough to go all-out), and I feel like the whole world is going to Hell in a hand basket right now. I can't find anywhere that really recognizes the qualities of the Republican values and conservative traits. Sometimes it makes me despair when I think about where in the world I can move and then realize that I'm lucky to be in the United States, but I'm still not happy with it.
Maybe Arizona. Or Washington. Pennsylvania has gone down in status and is now a Democratic state. I have to stay in the US b/c my boyfriend is a Marine. I kind of don't want to settle down, really... I'm excited for the Military life because they move around a lot. I'm one of those people who likes to stay clean and not get acquainted with any one place... because doing that would involve getting dirty (the build up of sentimentality that I can't seem to help, which eventually clouds my vision and clings to my body).
Wow, what a long explanation for a simple question >_> I'm sorry.

really nice fishgirl !! she wouldnt be a very good guard standing there like this though- she looks like she is ashamed and not really in the mood to guard anything... :D anyway nobody could possibly pass by her without being awestruck by her sweetness.i like the way you used the light- and i must say that i think your lightning and mood is much much better than the image you have been inspired with.i see what you tried to do with the lightning- in beryls image the effect is a little too obvious and "forced" in my opinion- i prefer the soft approach you gave it.

well gosh thanks!
I know what you mean about the pose not being very guard-like. I was focusing mostly on the painting and light and really didn't think enough about costume and pose (although I do like the pose, it just might not fit this aspect of her). Since i usually make more 'practical' concepts, I think I went the other way and only thought about the painting... now all i have to do is bring all the stuff I've learned together in one piece. Sounds easy, right... oh lol :D

Fear in my eyes, a smile on her lips and her hook in mine... "Why so serious?" She told me. My last words were : "AMEN!" After 5d6 of holy damage, no one was alive in the room... I fail. The great Lord of terror is still, but his army falls down and will not rules the world a other single day. One by one, we fight, we win, we purificate. My blood have done his work. Good luck brothers of war.

My english is so bad... Anyway, thanks for the small moment of imagination your demonette gave me.

Gorgeous CG! The lighting is lovely, and I'm digging the subtle scale pattern on her clothes. It looks like she can hook gigantic tuna right out of the sea.

I really like the hints of cyan on her skin. The cyan/red edge on the shadows is pretty cool. How did you achieve that effect? I was wondering if there was a filter or adjustment layer for that. If you do have a chance to answer this question, I would definitely appreciate it, it's something I've been wondering for a while.

actually, that was a really awesome trick a guy at work showed me as he was passing by my desk at lunch. He just came by and said-- hey can I show you something for skin? and i handed it over LOL. this totally rocked my world, but I'm not sure I caught it all correctly, so I'll have to experiment-- or snag him as he passes on monday :P
Basically he took the red channel and blurred it slightly(I use photoshop, btw), which leaves those greens more obvious on the edges and creates the illusion of sub-surface scattering (light passing through the translucency of skin)
The part I didn't catch as well was how he made a layer out of that on which I masked out what I didn't want... (so removing the blurred reds from where they weren't needed, like... in the blues :P)

Like I said, this totally rocked my world, so i'm glad it's something that other people found cool, too...
I'm certainly going to keep trying that technique, so if I pin it down well enough, maybe i'll throw together a tutorial sheet for it (though it might take a while before I get it perfected). In the meantime, feel free to experiment with that and let me know if you hit on something cool!

Ah, I figured it out. I duplicated the entire original image before doing the red channel trick. Then I put a layer mask on the manipulated layer, and that let me brush out the cyans without a hitch. I didn't realize before channels only effected a certain layer, not the entire image. So handy.

Thank you -so- much! I never realized you could apply filters on channels. That idea definitely rocks my world. I was experimenting with one of my old works, and finally got that sort of sub-surface scattering (as you say!). I'm excited to try it on some environments soon. I'm still working on trying to figure out how to mask the red out of other areas too. The hard way seems to be to through the art history brush, but I'm sure there's a more elegant and efficient way to do it.

I'll keep my eye out for your tutorial. And thanks again for explaining this, it's such a cool trick.

Out of curiosity, where do you work?
